Why Why Why?
August 27, 2006
Are there no good horror movies anymore? And I’m not talking about Bram’s Stoker’s Dracula. Francis Ford Coppola’s gothic masterpiece was a visual feast and even 14 years later is still a much loved favourite of mine.
BUT!
Why aren’t there more movies like that? And no I’m not even going to touch Van Helsing with a 10 foot pole. I hate that piece of regurgitated computer animation crap with a passion I can’t even describe accurately. Van Helsing smacks of a Coppola rip-off. Granted artistic liberties are always going to be thrown in willy-nilly and suspension of disbelief has to be a complusory mindset for any horror movie fan…but crap is crap. And no amount of werewolves bouncing off the walls can improve it.
Speaking of werewolves. Another group of naughty buggers that have been overlooked. Yes I know there’s Underworld and Underworld : Evolution and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them – but they’re lacking in the bite department if you know what I mean. Both are extremely entertaining and are well made but when a movie is based on a comic book, you just know it’s going to be heavy on the action and low on horror.
What I wouldn’t give for another An American Werewolf In London, which is still superb in my humble opinion (I spent RM280 on the original director’s cut DVD with all the extras). Even The Howling wasn’t too shabby at all.
*Sigh*
Okay, whining done.
I’ve got a thing for vampires! I’ve read almost all of Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles ‘cept for the latest ones.
An American Werewolf in London & the Howling gave me nightmares lar. Good horror movies hard to come by these days. Couldn’t believe they made a reality show horror movie like the Blairwitch Project. That was just plain waste of time.
Hi Yanti – ya me too! The Vampire Lestat and Queen Of The Damned are two of my fave books or all time. Tho I hate the movie version of Queen – it just plain sucked ass even if Aaliyah was pretty cool as Akasha.
The Blair Witch Project bored me too much. I actually fell asleep watching it…Imagine that
bcoz malaysians are too enthralled by the korean/jap/hk schlock girl-drenched-in-blood cheap horror variety…
Hi Simon – I know, I just didn’t know enough about those movies to comment cos I hardly watch em’…but I know how my friends scream when they watch em. I’m always hiding behind my duvet hehe
aih! I love horror. Zombie varieties. Evil dead still scare the living daylights out of me.
I watched Stephen King’s IT with full fervor but got extremely disappointed at the end.
I forgive van helsing becos hugh jackman is beautiful.
Malaysians freak on girldrenchedinblood movies simply because its the kind of horror story they grew up knowing/ listening to.
still nothing beats Evil Dead. BAD BAD scene cuts if u watch it now. haha. but stil scary!
